Exploring the Noetic Dimension: A Journey Beyond the Psyche
A concept that makes Logotherapy unique is the notion of the noetic dimension. Many conversations have been had over this concept and how it may allude to a deeper dimension within the human being, a distinct domain apart from the psyche, the emotive, and the organic.
I would propose that this dimension is a sphere or domain that encapsulates all of the aforementioned areas and more. It permeates through, transcends over, or encapsulates them all – due to some quantumn, sublime, and ethereal implication.
Now this may be simply speculative or theoretical to empirical sciences, and would be imperative, if not vital, to somehow validate this research through quantitative means.
Yet, time and time again, many who come to recognize the inner dimension as the deepest reservoir of the human essence, known as the noetic, do so because they have felt or have had this deep intuitive knowing. Gnosis?
A deep knowing that there is more to the human self than impulses and neuroses, and more than simply the emotive nervous system. The emotive nervous system encompasses not just the emotional center but also the psychological aspects—both conscious and unconscious—that are constantly firing in response to triggers embedded throughout the environment. Each of these ontological elements and domains are symbiotically connected to the others.
Yet, beyond these connections, is the transcendent or auric aspect of the self, perhaps also known as the ‘Higher Self’, which is also the embodiment of the noetic dimension.
If we were to extend further, beyond the horizon of this paradigm and concept, we might reach the absolute notion of the grand transcendent or collective whole to which we are all connected in some sublime way. This might be the collective unconscious alluded to by Carl Jung or better accounted for through some other quantum concept.
Are we not then bordering on the mystical or metaphysical? Perhaps.
Is there validity to this, in the scientific evidence-based treatment of psychopathology? Perhaps.
However, there may be more yet to be discovered and testified as factual truth.
