Ironies of Connection: Navigating Relational Impasses
Challenging relational dynamics are indeed ironic. Consider two people who have just met, unfamiliar with each other. Typically, if there’s mutual interest, both individuals would engage in conversation to get to know one another. However, if one individual does not engage in what is considered routine communicative norms while the other communicates effectively, an impasse emerges.
Two different communication styles and disparate understandings signal early warning signs of a relationship destined for disarray. Power dynamics and power struggles manifest, alongside an inability to overcome barriers self-imposed by the fallacies of an ego that has been broken, betrayed, and abused. In the act of self-preservation, people push away, lash out, and attack the other. Emotional reactivity thus becomes a symptom of a mind and heart misaligned.
